  • What is Ultrasound?
Ultrasound is a common imaging method using high frequency sound waves to produce real time images of structures within your body. The information gathered can provide valuable information to monitor pregnancy, help with diagnosing and directing treatment for a variety of diseases and conditions.
  • Is Ultrasound safe?
    Yes, Diagnostic ultrasound is safe.
  • What will the scanning procedure look like?
After you have checked in at reception, you will be brought into a dimly lit room. The dimmed lighting makes it easier to display and interpret the ultrasound images on the screen. You will be asked to lie on the scanning couch and to expose the area of interest (i.e. Tummy). The sonographer will use tissue paper to protect your clothing from the ultrasound gel. This gel is water based and does not stain. The ultrasound gel may feel cold when applied to the skin. The transducer (Ultrasound Probe) will be moved over the area of interest while a small amount of pressure is applied to obtain the image. You may be asked to follow breathing instructions depending on the scan being performed. Pregnancy, fertility, gynae scans may involve a transvaginal scan. This of course is optional and you may bring a adult companion with you for support. A transvaginal scan involves a thin transducer (ultrasound probe) being inserted into the vaginal. The transducer will have undergone high level decontamination, a cover and sterile gel are also used. Please make the sonographer aware if you are allergic to latex. You may be asked to go to toilet and empty your urinary bladder. When it’s time to begin the transvaginal scan, you lie down on your back on the examination table and bend your knees. You will be given paper towel to place over yourself prior to lying bowel. A soft triangular wedge will be under your bottom to tilt the pelvis. This allows the transducer to move and obtain the necessary images.
